We recently had the opportunity to interview Melinda Price, the owner and CEO of Tre’Bella Nail Spa. Melinda’s journey is one of faith, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit, having transitioned from her role as an Operations Manager to building a thriving business in the beauty industry. In our conversation, she shares the challenges she faced, her commitment to quality, and the inspiring story behind her nail salon and non-profit organization. Her passion for helping others succeed is truly at the heart of her work.
The Inspiration Behind Tre’Bella
SBS – What inspired you to start Tre’Bella Nail Spa, and how did you choose the name?
Melinda – In 2017, I quit my job as an operations manager for a privately owned ambulance company without any idea what I would do next. One day, while sitting in a newly opened, Black-owned nail salon in my neighborhood, I remembered I had a nail technician license and thought, “I can do this.” From there, God guided me every step of the way, helping me secure the location and set everything up within two weeks.
Overcoming Challenges
SBS – Can you share some challenges you faced while setting up your nail spa and how you overcame them?
Melinda – When I decided to move my salon to a bigger location, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, causing delays in the move, supply shortages, and overall process. During that time, I stayed in prayer, asked God for guidance, and practiced patience to get through the obstacles.
Quality and Safety
SBS – How do you ensure the quality and safety of the products and services you offer?
Melinda – We prioritize sterilizing all equipment and furniture between each client. We never dilute our products to stretch them and always use the highest quality materials, including some from my own brand.
Effective Marketing Strategies
SBS – What marketing strategies have you found most effective in attracting and retaining clients?
Melinda – I use social media daily. In the beginning, I was so grateful for my CVS High School family — they showed immense support on social media, patronized the salon, shared posts, and referred people. I also regularly used Facebook and Instagram ads, sent mailers to local residents, and passed out flyers wherever I went. Plus, I made sure to always keep my nails done, serving as a walking billboard. For three months, I even had a billboard at the 159th exit off I-57.
Staying Ahead
SBS – How do you stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in the nail care industry?
Melinda – Social media keeps me informed about the latest trends and techniques. If I come across something new I want to learn, I invest in a class. It’s essential to keep learning and evolving in this industry.
Educational Offerings
SBS – Can you tell us more about the classes you offer and what participants can expect to learn from them?
Melinda – I currently teach a GelX class. GelX is a gel application for nail extensions. In the class, I teach the application process, how to create press-on nails, and how to market a new GelX business.
Business Management
SBS – How do you manage the business side of things, such as finances, staffing, and scheduling?
Melinda – For the most part, I’m a one-woman show. I use QuickBooks to manage finances and Square to manage staff and schedules. I’ve also hired an accountant to ensure I’m handling taxes and finances correctly.
Misconceptions About Nail Salons
SBS – What are some common misconceptions about running a nail salon that you would like to address?
Melinda – Running a business is not easy. It can keep you up at night, worrying about where the next dollar will come from, how to manage overhead expenses, or whether you can afford to hire new staff. It’s also essential to stay up to date with trends to remain relevant. There are so many facets to running a business, and success requires diligence and consistency.
Staff Development
SBS – How do you train and motivate your staff to maintain high standards of service?
Melinda – When I hire a new staff member, they shadow me for the first week to learn all our processes. This ensures that everyone follows the same procedures and achieves consistent results. It’s like a “bootcamp with Mel.”
Future Goals
SBS – What are your long-term goals for Tre’Bella Nail Spa, and how do you plan to achieve them?
Melinda – I’m working with the State of Illinois to open Tre’Bella Nail Academy, where we’ll train aspiring nail techs on how to succeed in the industry. I also plan to train techs to eventually work at other Tre’Bella Nail Spa locations.
Diverse Services
SBS – Can you discuss the importance of offering a diverse range of services, such as manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements?
Melinda – Offering a diverse range of services is crucial for any nail salon’s success. It helps attract a wider variety of clients, as not everyone is looking for the same service. By providing options, we appeal to a broader clientele.
SHE NAILS THE FUTURE Initiative
SBS – Can you tell us more about your SHE NAILS THE FUTURE initiative and its impact on your business?
Melinda – She Nails the Future is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering aspiring nail technicians with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the beauty industry. Our mission is to provide mentorship, education, and support, fostering confidence and resilience in the next generation of female leaders. We aim to help them not only face the challenges of the future but conquer them with strength and determination.
Advice for Aspiring Salon Owners
SBS – What advice would you give to someone looking to open their own nail salon?
Melinda – My advice is to work in a salon first and shadow a business owner to see if this is truly what you want to do. Do your research, be financially prepared, and remain consistent. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can offer support and encouragement.
